About / Bio
To me art is a story in a vague universal language. The artist and the viewer both find space within the vagueness to fit their recall of the beauty, the passion, the pain, or the endearing parts of their own lives.

This is the charm of art. A story, universal in its language and feeling, speaking to all.

Yaa Asantewaa Painting

With that look of cynicism I needed a strong name for the painting. Yaa Asantewaa was perfect. As I understand it, the men leaders of her nation were captured and exiled when they refused to be subjugated. She felt the remaining men didn’t have the will to fight, so in a speech she said she would put together an army of women that would be willing to fight to the death. This goaded the men’s pride into following her lead.

In 1900, Yaa Asantewaa led the Ashanti rebellion known as the War of the Golden Stool, also known as the Yaa Asantewaa war, against British colonialism.

Thank you Kholaa. Kholaa is a Rochester model. Her pose at the Rochester Art Club space for a group of painters led to this painting.
