I believe reality to be in the eye of the viewer. Aesthetically interesting subject matter and composition may draw the viewer in, creating a reality in the viewers imagination. If an emotional response is evoked by what the viewer finds in the vision of art, it will be meaningful to that viewer.

When art is composed well, the emotional responses of anticipation and discovery is found in the viewing. This can be so pleasurable we may return time and time again without boredom to that image of reality, much like listening to our favorite music.

The viewer, being human, cannot escape identifying with the figure because it represents the human condition, and the uniqueness of individuals. Thus I feel the figure is the best possible subject matter to connect with the viewer.

Artists labor within artistic and social boundaries to produce visual metaphors. That process by default invokes the self examination and social recognition that in-turn mold the work of art and the hand that makes it.

I start with a visual concept that gives me enjoyment and then try to produce and present my art in a way others may recognize my idea and identify with it. While I work, a flood of ideas take me on digressions of exploration. That is where I find that same pleasurable anticipation and discovery that I plan for the viewer. The exploration influences the evolution of the art work and my self. My reality is different than that of the viewer I am sure, but I rely on artistic convention to convey part of my ideas and leave human experience that we all share to convey the rest.
