Artist Statement:
“Art for me is a torment, grievous when it goes bad, ecstatic when it goes well; but always it
possesses me.” MICHELANGELO
In 2003 I began exploring art once again for the first time since High School with meditative
drawings. The desire to paint was overwhelming. I began to study watercolor, pastel, charcoal,
and oil painting. I am fascinated with people. I love to portray them, understand them, and
describe them with color, line, value, and texture. It is equally engaging to paint the landscape
en plein air. I find the same faculties are employed in both, as we must capture the essence and
mood of a particular motif in a specific amount of time before the feelings fleet away.
The idea for double image paintings fomented from the question all artists must ask, What if? I
have found that inspiration for me comes in the contemplation of a painting and continues as I
progress in paint and design. Once the design of a figure painting is well established I begin to
ask, “What if another figure was placed in such a manner to accentuate the first, so as to create a
completely different design where the two couldn’t exist separately but needed each other?” The
discoveries are endless and surprising!
